The Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers a wide range of courses in language, literature, film, culture, and language courses in Spanish and Portuguese. We offer a major in Spanish, and minors in Spanish, Hispanic Language and Culture (HLC), and Portuguese and Luso-Brazilian Culture. A major or minor in Spanish or Portuguese provides students with critical language and cultural understandings in today’s globalized world. Indeed, Spanish is the primary language in 20 countries and is the native language of about 486 million people; domestically, about 13.4% of individuals in the United States speaks Spanish. Moreover, Portuguese is the 5th most spoken language in the world with about 230 million native speakers.
