Congratulations to Jonathan Godinez Paez, who successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation titled "Fronteras literarias y cuerpos ciborg: las desigualdades sociales en la ciencia ficción mexicana (1991-2014)," which addresses how social inequalities are represented and accentuated by Mexican science fiction. The Department of Hispanic Languages of Literatures would like to congratulate Kelvin Duran Berrios on receiving the 2023 Concha Meléndez Literary Criticism Award as part of the National Literature Awards of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture (Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña-ICP). This award was for an essay based off his doctoral dissertation.

Congratulations to Andrés Obando, who defended his dissertation titled “Naturalezas sin tierra: paisaje y literatura en en Latinoamérica (1845-1942)”, and which was directed by Dr. Daniel Balderston. Other professors in his committee were Dr. Juan Duchesne and Dr. Gonzalo Lamana. At present, Dr. Obando is living in Madrid and planning to continue his studies as a post-doc student. Congratulations to Agustín Abreu Cornelio for successfully defending his PhD dissertation titled “Escribirse en México: estudio sobre la escritura de refugiado y el caso de Luis Cardoza y Aragón” which discusses the Guatemalan poet Cardoza y Aragón’s years and writings in Mexico, and the legal censorship and cultural limitations imposed upon his writings as a “refugiado”. His dissertation team was composed of Dr. Áurea María Sotomayor (Chair), Dr. John Beverley (Emeritus Professor), Dr. Jennifer Josten (external reader from History of Art and Architecture) and Dr. David Tenorio.

Greetings to Fabián Darío Mosquera, who defended successfully his PhD dissertation titled “Un Occidente vernáculo: hacia otro crítica trasatlántica de la modernidad. Pasolini, Celán y la Nauhaus para América Latina”, a place where Mosquera inquires into the possibility of an Other West in Latin America. His study of Pasolini (Petroglio), Celan’s poetry and Bauhaus ‘s architecture looks for a heterotopic space for philosophical controversy. Congratulations to Natalia M Rivera Morales for successfully defending her PhD Dissertation
It is a great joy to announce and celebrate Natalia M. Rivera Morales’s successful defense of her PhD dissertation titled “Nativist Psychosis: Impressions on Psychiatric and Intellectual Dissability in Puerto Rican Literature, Medical Culture, and Jurisprudence”. This is the first dissertation on disability studies defended in the Department, and it has as focus induced psychiatric constructs in the oeuvre of Pedro Juan Soto, René Marqués and Abniel Marat. The figure of Pedro Albizu Campos is examined throughly as a case of Punitive Psychiatry.

Congratulations to Edgar Colón Meléndez, who successfully defended his dissertation “El ajedrez en la literatura Argentina: Borges, Walsh, Piglia”, where he studies chess as a device in the works of Borges (El jardín de senderos que se bifurcan), Rodolfo Walsh short stories and Ricardo Piglia’s Respiración artificial and La ciudad ausente. An analysis of the dynamic structure of El jardín de senderos que se bifurcan, as well as Walsh’s elliptical narrations/ politics, and Piglia’s hypertextuality regarding his friend/ maestro Walsh are part of his discussion.

Congratulations to Gabriela Schiapacasse for successfully defending her PhD Dissertation titled “Terror, trauma, horror y abyección en las novelas de Giovanna Rivero, Julio Ortega y Oscar Colchado Lucio”. The thesis explores social violence, repression and the fantastic figures arising from political terror in the Andean region, specifically Bolivia and Perú.
