It is a great joy to announce and celebrate Natalia M. Rivera Morales’s successful defense of her PhD dissertation titled “Nativist Psychosis: Impressions on Psychiatric and Intellectual Dissability in Puerto Rican Literature, Medical Culture, and Jurisprudence”. This is the first dissertation on disability studies defended in the Department, and it has as focus induced psychiatric constructs in the oeuvre of Pedro Juan Soto, René Marqués and Abniel Marat. The figure of Pedro Albizu Campos is examined throughly as a case of Punitive Psychiatry. Her dissertation committee was composed of Dr. Áurea María Sotomayor (Chair), Dr. Julio Ramos (Emeritus Professor, University of California at Berkeley), Dr. Juan Duchesne Winter and Dr. David Tenorio.
